Kuldeep Sengar convicted in Unnao rape case, CBI seeks life imprisonment.
A Delhi court on Monday convicted MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar for raping a minor in Unnao in 2017 and held the victim’s testimony as “unblemished, truthful and of sterling quality” and slammed the CBI for selectively leaking witness statements and call detail records to weaken the girl’s case.
Sengar, who is a Bangarmau MLA, has been held guilty by the court of abducting and raping a minor girl at his residence in Unnao in June 2017, where she had gone seeking a job. The four-time BJP MLA was arrested last year and is currently lodged in Tihar jail.
The court also expresses displeasure with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the delay in filing the charge sheet. It was revealed that the girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped for nine days at different places by three persons when she was a minor in 2017.
Seeking maximum punishment for Sengar, the CBI’s Additional Special Public Prosecutor says to District Judge Dharmesh Sharma that it is a fight for justice of an individual against the system. The agency also calls sufficient financial compensation for the rape survivor.
CBI’s Additional SPP further referred to judgments delivered by the Supreme Court to back his arguments seeking a stricter punishment to 53-year-old Sengar. He added that considering the impact of such a crime, the convict deserves maximum punishment.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep Sengar’s lawyer argued that he is a poor person and can’t afford to pay compensation the rape victim. “The compensation should not be paid by Kuldeep Sengar,” the lawyer argued.
CBI court that convicted expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar in the Unnao rape case deferred its decision on the quantum of punishment today. The court said it will hear the matter again on December 20.
