The government pays tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 95th birth anniversary.
On the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tributes to him at the ‘Sadaiv Atal’ memorial in Delhi this morning.
Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, and others paid tribute to Vajpayee at the ‘Sadaiv Atal’ memorial in New Delhi. Vajpayee’s adopted daughter Namita Kaul Bhattacharya and granddaughter Niharika were also present there to pay their tribute.
Singer Anup Jalota was on stage. In his soulful voice, he sang prayers in memory of BJP stalwart, late Vajpayee.
Vajpayee, who was one of the tallest leaders and co-founder of the BJP, died on August 16, 2018, at the AIIMS following a prolonged illness. He was 93.
Earlier on Wednesday, PM Modi took to twitter, ” The citizens of this country give their tribute to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is in their hearts, on his birth anniversary,”
Shah said Vajpayee left an indelible mark in Indian politics with his “nationalistic thinking, impeccable image, and dedicated life to the nation”.
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Mr. Vajpayee led a “fascinating life of dedication to a cause and perseverance when there was no hope.”
December 25 is also celebrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party as Good Governance Day in memory of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In 2015, Vajpayee was bestowed with Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civil honor.
Later during the day, PM Modi will be unveiling the statue of the former prime minister in Lucknow.
