Indian Railways to resume their services from May 12.

India is now entering into the last week of 54 days nationwide lockdown. Indian Railways announces the resumption of passenger trains from May 12. Starting from March 25 Indian Railways services were stopped across the country in the wake of nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus.

According to Indian Railways, 15 air-conditioned special trains will operate from this Tuesday. Booking for these trains will resume at 4 pm on May 11. The reservations can be made only through IRCTC official website (https://www.irctc.co.in/). There will be no reservation services available at the railway station.

Railways set to kick start services.

The Ministry of Railways announces that it will gradually resume passenger services initially with 15 special trains. These special trains will start from New Delhi railway station connecting 15 cities of the country.

“Indian Railways shall start more special services on new routes. Based on the available coaches after reserving 20,000 coaches for COVID-19 care centres and adequate number of coaches being reserved to enable operation of up to 300 trains everyday as “Shramik Special” for stranded migrants,” says Railways Ministry.

It’s the first time in the history of national transporters that passenger services are under suspension such a long time. The Indian Railways passenger services have been suspended for 45 days now, the longest in the 167-year-old history of national transporters.

Protocol is mandatory.

All the passengers will have to follow the Covid19 protocols of the government. They will have to wear face masks and undergo screening at the railway stations. Also only those passengers will be able to board the train who are asymptomatic.

According to Rajest Dutt, Railway Ministry’s Executive Director Bajpai, these trains will follow the protocol of social distancing as well. The three-tier AC coaches will carry 52 passengers and two-tier coaches will carry 48 passengers.

To mitigate the hardship of the citizens, the Railways have taken this decision. Since the lockdown implementation Railways suspended its passenger services. Only freight and special trains were operating to transport essential goods across the country.
