UAE is likely to host IPL 2020 in September.
UAE is likely to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in September. IPL which usually takes place between March-May stands postponed due to the outbreak of Covid19 pandemic. The BCCI in its Apex Council meeting has almost decided to conduct the 13th season of Indian Premier League.
Although the BCCI is keen on holding IPL 2020, conditions apply for the same. BCCI can conduct IPL 2020 only when ICC announces the cancellation of the T20 World Cup. The T20 World Cup was scheduled to take place in Australia between October-November.
“We cannot make an announcement till the ICC gives us a final call on the T20 World Cup. But we could see an official word after Monday’s ICC meeting. Once that is done, we can go ahead and make the necessary announcement,” says a BCCI official. According to reports, IPL 2020 is likely to be held between September 26 – November 6.
Once the ICC announces the cancellation of the T20 World Cup, BCCI may approach the Indian government to check if they can hold the IPL in India. Looking at the current Covid19 situation which is getting worse day by day in India, it seems unlikely that the government will give its nod to the tournament. Due to the continuous surge in Covid19 cases, several people have called for cancellation of the tournament.
UAE – The First Choice.
United Arab Emirates has become the first choice of BCCI as a venue to conduct the 13th season of IPL. UAE also conducted the seventh season of IPL in 2014 due to general elections in India. If UAE will get to host the IPL 2020 then Indian players will have to shift to Dubai for training camp. Due to the Covid19 pandemic, Indian players have not been practicing so it is likely that they will shift to Dubai to resume their practice sessions.
“If we conduct IPL in the UAE, then it only makes sense the Indian cricketers train there before the tournament. They have a good infrastructure in place. UAE is the most likely choice for the IPL with India getting increasingly unsafe due to COVID-19,” says a BCCI official.
He also adds that, “The other likely options are training camp in either Dharamsala or Ahmedabad (at the renovated Motera stadium) with a bio-bubble in place. But the cases continue to increase in India, so UAE will be the safest option.”
BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly says that India remains the first choice venue for conducting IPL. However, if the condition in India will not be conducive then the Board will shift the tournament to UAE. Ganguly also says that safety of players and stakeholders is the primary concern and they will take decisions accordingly.
A Shorter Window for IPL 2020.
The BCCI is planning to cut short the window for IPL 2020. According to reports, the Board is planning to shorten the window to 5-6 weeks. Final call on any decision regarding IPL 2020 may come once ICC postpones the T20 World Cup on Monday.
Though the preparations of IPL 2020 are in the preliminary stage, the fans of the glitzy tournament are more than excited. As soon as the news of UAE might host IPL 2020 surfaced, the IPL lovers didn’t waste any time in spreading the news on social media. The news is already trending on Twitter and other social media platforms and spreading like a wildfire.
